Tomato prices started to rise again after Eid Al-Adha. The kilo, which cost only three dirhams, rose to seven dirhams, which angered consumers.
In this regard, Abderrazzak Chabi indicated that the prices of tomatoes have experienced a vertiginous increase because of the export of fruits and vegetables to Africa.
In a statement to Le Site info, the president of the association of wholesale fruit and vegetable markets indicated that prices had fallen in recent weeks due to the suspension of exports to foreign markets. “But prices have started to rise again after the recovery. International exports explain the surge in tomato prices. Allegations that this surge is due to rising temperatures or the spread of a virus are completely unfounded,” explains Chabi.
“Professionals in the sector are not against exports to Africa but we demand its regulation and rationalization. Foreign markets have always had strict requirements for importing vegetables from Morocco. These requirements cover several aspects, including product quality, food safety, packaging, and compliance with environmental and social standards. This is not the case for African countries which do not have import conditions, which affects local supply and drives up vegetable prices,” underlines the president.
