It is a phenomenon which has caused numerous victims in Lyon in recent weeks. Several owners of recent Renault vehicles, such as Captur, have had the logo on the back of their car broken and stolen the rear view camera.

Hessin was the victim of this theft on his Renault Captur, while it was parked in the 6th arrondissement of Lyon, where several misdeeds of this type were noted, with supporting photos.

Rear logo removed to accommodate rear view camera

“It happened on rue Montgolfier, opposite place Zoé-Roche,” explains the man who has lived in this neighborhood for 48 years.

On June 9, Hessin moved his vehicle. “I don’t use my vehicle very much, I have a resident badge. That morning, I was reversing and I saw that it wasn’t working. I looked… there was no more camera and logo behind. They had even broken down the right side of my door,” he told news Lyon.

The next day, the Lyonnais went to the Renault Lyon Sud garage. There, he was quickly surprised by the scale of the phenomenon. “There were already three people waiting for this, including a poor lady who had this done to him in broad daylight.”

A dozen facts according to the national police

The Renault Lyon Sud garage reportedly noted 22 vehicles that had been victims of reversing cameras stolen in Lyon and Villeurbanne in recent weeks. “It was the bodywork Care department that told me.”

Contacted, the dealership did not respond to our request.

The interdepartmental management of the Rhône national police is well aware of these criminal acts. “There are about ten cases, but no increase. We are still mobilized on the ground, and when complaints are filed, we investigate,” we are told.

Several Renaults stripped of cameras in the same street

However, Hessin has the impression that this phenomenon is spreading. “Look,” he says, pointing to his phone. “These are Renaults which, like mine, had their reversing camera stolen on Monday June 24 and Tuesday June 25. »

Intrigued by this new thieves’ fad, he carried out his little investigation with his best friend. Still on his phone, he shows us reversing cameras for sale for a few days on Leboncoin via recently created accounts. “They are 40, 70 euros… It happened all at once in fact, it’s quite scary. »

Having his backup camera stolen hit Hessin’s wallet hard. Between his deductible and the cost of the repair, he had to take 1,400 euros out of his pocket. “Not to mention that it will take two to three weeks to repair and my vehicle is immobilized…”

Renault owners in the 6th arrondissement have been warned.
