Russia will become China’s largest gas supplier once power lines in Siberia and the Far East become fully operational in less than three years, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said on Friday.

“In 2027, the Far Eastern route will be launched with a capacity of 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year. With the Power of Siberia gas pipeline and the Far Eastern route reaching full capacity, Russia will become the China’s largest gas supplier,” Miller said in a statement.

Chinese demand for natural gas will continue to grow, according to Gazprom CEO.

Noting that Gazprom’s natural gas deliveries to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline are increasing “systematically”, he said that “The pipeline will reach the specified export capacity of 38 billion cubic meters of gas per year”, knowing that the pipeline should reach its design capacity next year.

“We continued to repeat historic records for daily exports to Chinese consumers earlier this year,” Miller said, adding that Russia’s goal was to increase natural gas delivery capacity and to provide a reliable long-term gas supply to consumers in Central Asia, citing growing demand for energy in the region.

Gazprom’s CEO said the first gas deliveries to Uzbekistan via the China-Central Asia pipeline began last year.

In 2023, Gazprom suffered a loss for the first time since 1999. The Russian gas giant is trying to diversify its export markets to compensate for the loss of the European market.
