Smart Bison hasn’t stopped seeing red. When it comes to vacations, ecology is no match according to a survey carried out by Ifop for the Roole company and published on Wednesday. The survey shows that some 76% of French people will take their car this summer to go on vacation.

Françoise Margueritte, 66, plans to travel the Tyrrhenian coast in July with her husband and his big Jeep Cherokee. “We want freedom above all else, to be autonomous,” explains this retiree from Digne. The couple travels almost all of their vacations by car, and only takes the TGV to go to Paris.

Freedom versus economy and ecology

According to the Ifop survey, holidaymakers who go by car do so first (76%) to be able to visit the surrounding areas of their holiday destination. 60% of them, particularly the elderly, want to be able to transport more luggage more easily, and 38% believe that the car costs them less than the train or plane.

Half of motorists plan to travel between 500 and 1,000 kilometers for a one-way trip. And the car budget for the holidays is estimated at around 300 euros on average. Moreover, to save money, those interviewed have their own tips: avoid gas station sandwiches by preparing picnics, practice eco-driving or even avoid toll highways.

According to another survey, carried out at the end of May by OpinionWay for Point S garages, 75% of French people choose their mode of transport for practical reasons, compared to 43% for economic reasons. Only 14% of those questioned justify the choice of their means of transport for ecological reasons.
