The Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Transparency (PFPDT) has confirmed that Meta will not train its AIs with Swiss user data. This decision follows a similar suspension in the EU in response to European regulations. For its part, Apple will not deploy its GenAI service in Europe this year.

The Federal Data Protection and Transparency Officer (PFPDT) announces that Meta will not use the data of Facebook and Instagram users in Switzerland to train its AI. The confirmation provided by the Meta group to the PFPDT follows the decision of the Californian group to suspend this type of use of data in the EU.

On June 10, Meta announced its intention to train its LLMs using content that EU citizens share on its platforms. Reason given: to ensure that its AI models and functions accurately “understand” European languages and cultures and trending topics on social media in Europe. But the data protection authority in Ireland, where Meta is headquartered in Europe, requested the project be suspended.

Apple is also facing a similar problem with Apple Intelligence, its free GenAI service for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Bloomberg reports that Apple has decided to block the provision of this capability to users in the EU this year, on the grounds that the European Digital Markets Act would force it to reduce the security of its products and services. A spokesperson for the AU told The Verge that under this regulation, gatekeepers such as Apple can offer their services on the European market provided they respect its rules.

Furthermore, a complementarity of the efforts of Apple and Meta in terms of AI cannot be excluded. Indeed, according to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook’s parent company has held discussions with Apple with a view to incorporating Llama 3, the AI model, within Apple Intelligence (like the already announced integration of ChatGPT from OpenAI).
