Alix Merle, Xerfi – Wood heating: the future of the sector in the face of budget cuts – Sector intelligence

The wood heating sector is subject to a significant reduction in public aid. Subsidies granted under MaPrimeRénov’ fell by 30% in April 2024. According to Xerfi’s new Focus study on the wood heating market, this decision marks a turning point in the support policy, directly affecting businesses. of this sector. This new provision also raises concerns about a possible future reduction in public support in a context where wood heating is the subject of criticism. It would exacerbate conflicts of use around forest resources which are already significant since wood is widely used by professionals in construction, biogas or biofuel production. Wood heating is also regularly singled out for the emissions of fine particles generated.

In response, manufacturers are forced to innovate to improve efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of their equipment. For example, ÖkoFen has put on the market a boiler model whose flameless combustion drastically reduces emissions of fine particles. The innovation efforts of manufacturers are accompanied in parallel by educational efforts by all players in the sector to raise awareness among wood heating users of good practices: replacement of old appliances that emit high amounts of fine particles, maintenance of the device and annual chimney sweeping by a professional, use of dry logs, etc. Some wood heating manufacturers are also tempted to diversify towards heat pumps.

Beyond the analysis of the growth levers activated by manufacturers, installers and traders, this study offers an analysis of competition through a detailed mapping of more than 150 players. The report also includes forecasts for the French domestic heating appliances market until 2026.
