If Emmanuel Macron’s popularity has continued to fall since his election in 2017, the French president had managed to make himself appreciated by economic circles. On the financial markets, his star lost its shine this week. Following the dissolution of the National Assembly on Sunday, investors sanctioned French assets, particularly targeting public debt.

On Friday, the yield gap between France’s ten-year bond and Germany’s – called the “spread” in financial jargon – continued to increase. The risk premium demanded for French securities reached its highest level since 2011. The rate was 3.12% in mid-afternoon, while its German equivalent fell to 2.35%.
