Electrification is accelerating in fleets

According to the 2024 fleet and mobility barometer, produced by the Ipsos institute for Arval Mobility Observatory, France is now in the top three of the most advanced European countries in terms of electrification of vehicle fleets.

With more than 8 out of 10 companies declaring that they have already adopted at least one alternative technology for their passenger cars, France is a good student compared to the European average. In detail, it is hybrid technology which comes first among electrified technologies (50% of companies having already implemented it) according to the barometer published by Arval, the long-term rental specialist.

The craze for hybrid technology

Indeed, before switching to 100% electric vehicles, in the eyes of fleet managers, hybrid technology currently appears to be an ideal solution, with sufficient autonomy to travel in urban environments, including in low-emission zones ( ZFE) where the most polluting vehicles are prohibited, while allowing long distances to be traveled, on motorways for example.

Strong development potential for electrification

For the moment, only three out of ten companies have switched to 100% electric mode. But, although this percentage seems low, it is on the other hand alternative energy which has seen the strongest growth in companies over one year (+5 points). In addition, the three-year development potential is significant with 24% of companies planning to implement it within 3 years. It is mainly companies employing more than 100 employees who intend to do so, in particular to comply with the mobility orientation law (LOM).

Obstacles still remain to be overcome

It must be said that the reluctance of fleet managers to adopt 100% electric vehicles still remains numerous: this ranges from the availability of public charging, to the absence of charging stations on company premises and in employees’ homes, through the high purchase price of the models. To make matters worse, let us recall the end of the bonus of 5,000 euros for electric passenger cars (VP) at the start of 2024, even if the acquisition of a new light utility vehicle still allows you to benefit from a bonus of 3,000 euros.

What is the mobility orientation law (LOM)?

Since January 1, 2022, companies and administrations must integrate electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles when renewing part of their fleet. For example, for companies with more than 100 vehicles, the current quota is 20%, then will increase to 40% on January 1, 2027 and finally to 70%, from January 1, 2030. Please note that at this time To date, no sanctions have been provided for entities not respecting these rules.
