Mezzour signs an MoU with the Italian NUTI IVO for the creation of a modern tannery in Morocco

A memorandum of understanding was signed Tuesday in Rabat between Ryad Mezzour and the CEO of the Italian tannery group NUTI IVO, Fabrizio Nuti, for the creation of a modern tannery in Morocco.

This memorandum of understanding, extending over the period 2025-2029, represents an investment of more than 131.2 million dirhams. It aims to achieve an annual turnover of 300 million dirhams, of which more than 90% will be intended for export, with the creation of 265 direct jobs over time. Daily production is estimated at 11,500 skins, mainly of local origin.

The project will be developed from a circular economy and sustainability perspective, integrating in particular the use of solar energy for part of the tannery’s electricity needs, as well as the treatment and recovery of waste for the production of fertilizer, compost and gelatin.

“The tanning industry in Morocco is a historic sector undergoing rapid change in the face of environmental challenges and requirements. The new project of the modern tannery of the NUTI IVO group fits perfectly into this dynamic. It will meet the requirements of target markets in terms of quality and compliance with environmental standards, thus offering an opportunity for companies in the Moroccan leather ecosystem wishing to significantly move upmarket,” commented the Minister of Industry and Development. NUTI IVO is one of the largest tannery groups in Italy, with a turnover of 150 million euros and employing more than 300 people. Present in Morocco since 2010 with the Shihara tannery, located in Marrakech in the Industrial Zone of Sidi Ghanem, the group achieved a turnover of more than 109.3 million dirhams mainly from exports, to destinations such as Italy, China and Thailand.
