How do retail brands manage to reconcile ecological transition and preservation of their margins? The latest study from Xerfi’s GreenBusiness collection deciphers the evolution of low-carbon strategies of 50 retail leaders. Among them, some are very offensive, keen to improve their image and comply with future regulations, such as the eco-tertiary decree aimed at reducing the energy consumption of sales areas. Distribution groups are also rolling out new eco-designed ranges for their own brands and training teams in responsible purchasing. However, options like second hand can prove complex to implement, particularly at the supply chain level, and risky, as they are likely to trigger a price war.

So, what solutions should we prioritize to make retail more sustainable without sacrificing operational performance? And who are the most eco-committed actors?

As part of this report, Xerfi experts analyzed in particular the decarbonization solutions and good practices implemented by retail players. Five major trends emerge.

• First, the greening of the marketed offer. Retailers are therefore banking on new responsible purchasing or eco-design policies.
• Second, the deployment of new business models with repair services or the sale of used items.
• Some players are focusing more on more virtuous modes of transport…
• … or even on the development and use of more ethical packaging.
• Finally, retail leaders are aiming to improve the energy efficiency of points of sale while making greater use of renewable energies to supply stores with energy.

In this brand new study, Xerfi consultants, specially trained in CSR issues, offer you an unprecedented analysis of the carbon transition of distribution brands. In addition to a benchmark of companies’ environmental performance, the study takes a close look at the challenges, risks and opportunities faced by retail players in their transition as well as the innovative solutions implemented to achieve this.
