In 2023, accident insurance Suva saved 105 million francs in medical costs thanks to invoice checks. Nearly a tenth of invoices had an error or inaccuracy and were returned for correction.
Savings are thus 10% higher than those of the previous year, Suva indicated on Tuesday. The cost savings will benefit Suva policyholders in the form of lower premiums.
The insurer checked 2.5 million medical and hospital bills last year, 70% of which were automatic.
Double invoices and uninsured benefits
A system verifies medical invoices received by Suva. If no error or inaccuracy is detected, the payment is authorized. Otherwise, specialized employees will be responsible for analyzing the file. “In the event of an unjustifiable irregularity, invoices are returned to suppliers for correction,” writes Suva. Most rejections concern duplicate invoices, as well as incorrectly invoiced or uninsured services.
Other measures are being taken by Suva to curb premiums. These include tools for electronic exchange of information with service providers and pricing agreements with doctors, hospitals and therapists.
