If this story mentions fears of a shift towards an authoritarian regime in the United States and may bring to mind the return of Trump, the Huffington Post also mentions the current fascination with survival games, such as can be found in the videos of Mr Beast, or even in Squid Game. Moreover, on September 29, Trump suggested establishing a day of police violence to put an end to crime: “A really tough, nasty and violent day of police retaliation in order to immediately eradicate crime.” He then returned to his words by reducing this day to one hour: “A difficult hour and I mean really difficult”.

Beyond authoritarianism and survival games, we find in this novel an America affected by heavy pollution causing disease, and subject to an unequal health system.

In 1987, a first film adaptation of the book was made, imagining the society of 2019. This film directed by Paul Michael Glaser is accused of plagiarism since it presents numerous similarities with “The Price of Danger” by Yves Boisset. A complaint was also filed against the film “Running Man” in the 90s. It is now the society of 2025 which will be depicted in the new adaptation directed by Edgar Wright and which is scheduled for release at the end of 'year.
