Car production in Italy fell by around 46% in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching its lowest level since 1956.
The FIM-CISL union announced automobile production figures for 2024 on Friday.
The decline of the Italian automobile industry accelerated in 2024.
Italy, the European Union’s third-largest economy, saw car production fall by around 46% last year to 283,009 units, the lowest level since 1956. Production of commercial vehicles also fell by 17% to reach 192,000 units.
Vehicle production at Stellantis in Italy, created in 2021 by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and France’s PSA-Peugeot, fell about 37 percent last year to 475,090. The company had produced 751,384 cars in 2023.
Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest automaker by volume, faces weak demand for electric vehicles, regulatory uncertainty and fierce Chinese competition, like other automakers in Europe.
“The year 2024 will be remembered as the dark year of Stellantis,” the union said in a statement.
– Production target of 1 million euros
Stellantis, which produces brands including Fiat, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Lancia at five factories in Italy, had no comment on the figures.
The Italian government, which is under pressure, aims to increase automobile production in the country to more than one million vehicles.
