I am an animal: rethinking the encounter with animals. This is the title of the new book by prolific writer Camille Brunel. The Châlonnais, now based in Brest but who regularly returns to the prefectural town of Marne, this time launches into a philosophical essay. With, as always, his favorite theme: the defense of the animal cause.
“This book is a synthesis of contemporary animalism. The idea of consciousness is central: we must recognize animal consciousness as it really exists, presents Camille Brunel. Animals do not express their consciousness in words. I explain that it is widespread among the majority of animals: they are aware of who they are and their limits. It is a philosophical reflection that is as embodied as possible: in each paragraph, the narrator metamorphoses and becomes the animal concerned by the considerations. »
All paragraphs begin with anaphora “I am…”, with reference to the formula “I am another” by Rimbaud. “I emphasize what is in the “is”. The idea is that “is” is subjectivity. The book critiques the idea of an animal mystery: I try to bring them closer to us and rethink the encounter. »
