The management of the Montreal Book Fair (SLM) committed Thursday not to use artificial intelligence (AI) in its posters and graphics.
The SLM organization was recently questioned by illustrator Pascal Blanchet to find out if it had used AI in the creation of the event poster. After examination, the SLM indicates “that more than 90% of human creativity was used in the design” of the graphic universe of its 2024 edition, but that certain illustrations taken from image banks had been created using of AI.
“Today, we are committed to ensuring that AI is no longer used in the creation of our graphic universes until there is a firmer and more transparent framework that respects artists and copyrights and illustrators,” declared Olivier Gougeon, general director of the Montreal Book Fair, in a press release.
Last week, the Outaouais Book Fair was criticized for a poster for its youth tour using images created using AI.
“We assure you that we take this issue seriously and that we greatly value the work and profession of illustrators. We wish to contribute not only to reflection, but also to actions and good practices to respect artists and copyright in this context of the omnipresence of AI,” continued the general management of the SLM, which is also committed to organizing a round table on the issue during its next edition.
Last May, the Montreal BD Festival also spoke out against the presence of work designed — in whole or in part — by generative AI in its sales stands and award ceremonies.
The Montreal Book Fair will be held from November 27 to 1is December at the Palais des Congrès.
