The New York Jets had no room on the roster for Austin Seibert and the Washington Commanders are benefitting because of it.

With proven veteran Greg Zuerlein set to do the kicking for 2024 Jets, Seibert was a luxury on the 90-man roster and didn’t survive cutdown day as a result. This past week, the Commanders signed Seibert after releasing an underperforming Cade York.

In his Washington debut, Seibert burned the rival New York Giants by nailing 7 of 7 field goal attempts. His 30-yarder lifted the Commanders to a 21-18 victory at the gun.

Five days after signing, the 27-year-old Seibert was the lone Washington player to score on Sunday in Landover. He hit three-pointers from 27, 45, 26, 27, 29, 33 and 30 yards.

Seibert served two separate stints on the Jets’ Practice Squad in 2023 and filled in for Zuerlein during a Week 2 road battle against the Dallas Cowboys. He made his lone field goal attempt in a Green & White uniform, a 34-yarder, and added an extra point.

In the preseason with the Jets, Seibert split placekicking duties with Zuerlein. The 2019 fifth-round draft pick made all five field goal attempts this past summer with a long of 52 yards.

The Commanders got an up-close look at Seibert in their exhibition game against the Jets on August 10. He kicked off twice, recording one touchback, and scored four points on a 37-yard field goal and one PAT.

Meanwhile, Zuerlein continues to produce for the Jets. The 36-year-old made his lone field goal attempt and went 3-of-3 on PATs in Gang Green’s 24-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans on September 15.
