the first 1km skyscraper set to dominate the world

Jeddah's skyline is set to be transformed by an unprecedented architectural feat. There JEC Towerformerly known as Jeddah Tower, is set to become the first skyscraper in the world to reach one kilometer in height. This titanic project, whose completion is scheduled for 2028, marks a decisive step in the history of vertical construction.

An architectural challenge of dizzying dimensions

The JEC Tower, designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, is cleverly inspired by nature to defy the laws of physics. Its triangular shapeevoking the folded leaves of a desert plant, is not just an aesthetic choice. This innovative structure was designed to resist strong winds which blow at these extreme altitudes.

To support this dizzying mass, engineers have developed a titanic foundation system:

  • 270 bored piles
  • Depth reaching 105 meters
  • Ultra-resistant concrete base

Inside, the numbers are dizzying:

Characteristic Name
Floors 157
Elevators 59
Point d’observation 1 (highest in the world)

An ascent strewn with obstacles

The JEC Tower construction site, which began more than a decade ago, has experienced its share of ups and downs. Of the retards notables were recorded, notably due to political and economic upheavals in Saudi Arabia. The project was temporarily frozen at around 60 floors, before recently resuming with renewed vigor under the leadership of the prince Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud.

Initially called Kingdom Tower or Mile-High Tower, this colossal project underwent several name changes before settling on JEC Tower (Jeddah Economic Company Tower). The initial ambition to reach the mile (1.6 km) had to be scaled back, as geotechnical studies revealed that the ground could not support such a structure. However, with its 1,007 meters highthe tower will establish itself as a real record-breaker in the field of superstructures.

A symbol of excess and innovation

The JEC Tower doesn't just break records, it shatters them. Here are some striking comparisons:

  • More than 3 times the height of the Eiffel Tower
  • More than twice that of the Empire State Building
  • Almost twice the height of One World Trade Center, the current tallest skyscraper in the United States

This pharaonic project, estimated at approximately 1.9 billion US dollarsis not limited to its impressive height. He aims to become a major economic and tourist hub for the region. On the program: a luxury hotel, ultra-modern office spaces and high-end residences. The highest observation point in the world promises a unique experience for visitors, offering breathtaking views of the Red Sea and the surrounding desert.

Towards new architectural heights

As the JEC Tower sets to redefine Jeddah's skyline, it also raises questions about the future of vertical architecture. THE technical, environmental and economic challenges linked to such structures are colossal. Nevertheless, this project demonstrates the boldness and constant innovation in the field of construction.

Although rumors are swirling of a potential even taller skyscraper designed by Foster + Partners, the JEC Tower seems assured of retaining its title as the world's tallest structure for years to come. It embodies Saudi Arabia's ambition to position itself as a major player in architectural and technological innovation on a global scale.

The JEC Tower represents not only a feat of engineering, but also a symbol of the human desire to constantly push the boundaries of what is possible. As its construction nears completion, the whole world eagerly awaits the inauguration of this architectural giant which promises to mark the history of vertical construction.
