Australia: after a legal decision, Picasso paintings exhibited…in women’s toilets: News

After a court ruling banning a women’s space at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Australia, artist Kirsha Kaechele moved Picasso paintings into the women’s restroom, CNN reports.

Art in the toilet. Artist and curator Kirsha Kaechele has found a way around a court order requiring her to allow men into a women-only space at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania, Australia, CNN reported Tuesday.

She simply moved works by Picasso, previously exhibited in this feminine space, into the women’s toilets. “We never had a women’s toilet at MONA before, they were unisex“, explains Kirsha Kaechele on her Instagram account. But the “Ladies Lounge” had to close after a man sued me. And I didn’t know what to do with all those Picassos…” she explained.

The artist, wife of museum owner David Walsh, even published a video showing Picasso’s works hanging in these new toilets.

Ladies’ salon deemed discriminatory

The “Ladies Lounge“, or ladies’ salon, was inaugurated in December 2020 by Kirsha Kaechele to recreate the experience of exclusion of women in the art world. Only women could have access to this place hidden from the public by a curtain and supervised by a security guard.

In April 2023, a man filed a complaint against the museum for discrimination. The court ruled in his favor, explaining that the entrance ticket should allow access to all of the museum’s exhibitions, regardless of gender.

Following the ruling, Kirsha Kaechele expressed her intention to appeal the court decision to the Supreme Court.
