King Felipe VI, a needy sovereign

On June 19, 2024, it will already be 10 years since King Juan Carlos I abdicated in favor of his son, Felipe. On the sidelines of this 10th anniversary of Felipe VI’s reign, the Royal House shared seven photos of surprising style. The royal family has the habit of posing very formally in gala dress and portrait style or, on the contrary, in a more relaxed manner and with the family. A few days ago, for the 20th wedding anniversary of King Felipe and Queen Letizia, photos were also shared. On these, the sovereigns posed in the open air with their two daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia.

The series of seven photos shared for Felipe’s 10-year reign shows the sovereign in the exercise of his functions. Not on the ground where he is photographed by all the journalists covering the events but behind his desk. King Felipe also spends a lot of time behind his baroque oak desk at La Zarzuela Palace.

Realistic photos of King Felipe behind his desk

The photos show a needy ruler enjoying a view of La Zarzuela Gardens from his office. King Felipe combines modernity and heritage, as evidenced by the objects that decorate the premises. Between a small contemporary sculpture and the old square clock that belonged to King Philip V, founder of the Bourbon dynasty, King Felipe also leaves room for some personal souvenirs, including a frame with photos of his daughters. Behind his desk hangs on the wall a large painting representing King Charles III, the son of Philip V.

It is also possible to recognize the titles of the numerous books which are stored on a table in front of a large bay window. Here too, King Felipe is rather eclectic in the choice of his books, ranging from a history and culture book to a book on Brexit. Finally, King Felipe seems very studious. He studies a speech while walking from his desk, which has the soccer World Cup that Spain won in 2010, to another table cluttered with books. King Felipe is also a modern ruler, tapping on the screen of his phone while sitting on the edge of a round table.

This June 19, a festive program is planned to celebrate the 10 years of reign of King Felipe. In the morning, there will be a parade of the three components of the Army and a changing of the Royal Guard on the square of the royal palace. Subsequently, King Felipe will award the Order of Civil Merit in the Hall of Columns to civilians from all walks of life. King Felipe will deliver a speech and then have lunch with the recipients of the Order of Civil Merit in the gala dining room. In the afternoon, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia will visit the exhibition of children’s works which represent their vision of the royal function.

In the evening, the Royal Guard Orchestra will perform on the Place de l’Orient, open to the public, and the violinist of Lebanese origin Ara Malikian will finish his concert from one of the palace balconies. Around 11:00 p.m., the celebration will end with a projection of images on the facade of the palace, lasting four minutes and with the common theme of the tenth anniversary of the reign. The next day, King Felipe and Queen Letizia will inaugurate a photo exhibition on the theme of the sovereign’s 10 years of reign.
