In the Calabria region of Italy, a couple stole a baby from a maternity ward. They were arrested, and the child, a little girl, was returned to her parents.
While the birth of their daughter was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives, Italian parents experienced a real nightmare. According to Italian media, including Rai and Corriere della Sera, at the beginning of the week, little Sofia was born in a maternity ward in Cosenza, Calabria. But barely a day old, on Tuesday January 21, the infant was kidnapped by a couple, a 51-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man.
A surreal scene
Then begins a brief run. Thanks to video surveillance images, the police discovered that the suspect had posed as a nurse. Fortunately, they quickly found the couple. When they arrived at the suspects’ home, the scene was surreal. The kidnappers had organized a party to celebrate a birth. The house was decorated in blue. “When we entered, we first saw a blue arch, and upon knocking, we saw guests coming to celebrate a birth“, told Rai.
Still according to Rai, the suspect was obsessed with the idea of having a child and allegedly faked a pregnancy for the previous nine months.
-A resuscitated mom and dad
Relieved, the mother of little Sofia expressed her gratitude to the police in a long message on Facebook, reported by BFMTV: “The police did an exceptional job. While I had lost hope, an entire city or region kept looking for our little girl (…) The happy ending is that Sofia is fine“, she wrote, signing her message with the formula: “a mom and a dad who died and came back to life“.
This story also caught the attention of the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. For its part, the maternity ward assured that it would review its admission management system.
