During the sermon, Donald Trump remained impassive. At the end of the bishop’s remarks, he exchanged a look with Vice President JD Vance, a Catholic, who shook his head in apparent disapproval. The President denounced the “your bad guy” of a “radical leftist who [le] sharp”. Republican lawmaker Mike Collins said Bishop Budde should be “added to the list of expellees”. Other Trumpists have questioned his spiritual authority because of his gender. Fourteen thousand people signed a petition in support of Bishop Budde.

Trump calls Washington bishop ‘nasty’, demands apology

This is not the first time Bishop Budde has targeted Donald Trump. In 2020, she signed a column in the New York Timesin which she said she had been “horrified” upon discovering that Donald Trump had staged himself, a Bible in hand, in front of St. John’s Church, not far from the White House, “while he threatened to use military force” against demonstrators protesting following the death of George Floyd, who died of suffocation by ventral restraint during his arrest. Described as “pseudo-évêque” by Donald Trump, Mariann Budde oversaw the Washington National Cathedral’s removal of stained glass windows honoring Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson — replaced with stained glass windows depicting the fight for civil rights for African Americans.

On January 21, she spoke from the pulpit where Martin Luther King gave his last sermon, before his assassination, in April 1968. The hyphen is historical and symbolic: in his inauguration speech, Donald Trump invoked on “dream” by Martin Luther King of a society “indifferent to skin color and based on merit”. The recovery was shocking as, in his first executive orders, President Trump drew a line under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited any form of segregation or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

How far will Donald Trump’s territorial ambitions go? “There will be a day when we realize that America First is America Alone”
