It’s our colleagues from the French channel RMC that Lola, a young French woman, recounted her experience in Laos. She stayed with two friends in one of the hostels affected by the adulterated alcohol poisonings that occurred this week. In total, six tourists died after a stay in Vang Vieng. Upon learning of these deaths, Lola understood that she had undoubtedly avoided disaster.

Laos government says ‘deeply saddened’ after death of six tourists

The young woman recounts her experience at the Nana Backpackers hostel in Vang Vieng. “Every evening, for 2 hours, alcohol was free and unlimited“, she explains. Problem: several tourists in the hostel also get sick. “We were really bad, much more so than a classic ‘hangover’. One of my two friends had two drinks. One or two hours later, she felt unwell and lost consciousness.“, specifies Lola. A few days later, the French tourists understand that they have ingested methanol and are therefore under antibiotics. “It could have been us, we could have died…“, said the young woman after learning of the deaths of six people from methanol poisoning. The manager of the Nana Backpackers hostel has since been taken into police custody.
