One hundred and fifty-three migrants who were trying to reach England aboard two overloaded boats were rescued on Thursday in the English Channel, the maritime prefecture announced in a press release.

Thursday, “two migrant boats in difficulty in the strait” of Pas-de-Calais were reported to the Regional Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center (Cross) Gris-Nez,” indicated the maritime prefecture of Manche and the North Sea in a press release.

On the night of Wednesday to Thursday, a boat “heavily loaded” with migrants set sail and “after a few hours of sailing”, the people on board the boat requested assistance, she reported. Rescuers recovered 77 shipwrecked people from this boat who were dropped off at the port of Calais, the maritime prefecture said.

15 dead in the Channel in 2024

Thursday morning, a second boat in difficulty was rescued with 76 people on board left at the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Once at the dock, the castaways were “taken care of by the land rescue services and the border police”.

On 23 April, five migrants died in the same area while attempting to cross the Channel in an overloaded boat, bringing the number of migrants who have died in 2024 attempting to cross to at least 15. On 3 March, a seven-year-old girl died in the Aa Canal, which flows into the North Sea, after a small boat loaded with migrants capsized.
