Denmark wants to restrict the display of foreign flags on its territory, the Ministry of Justice announced on Wednesday.

“The Dannebrog (the name of the Danish flag, editor’s note) is the most important national symbol of Denmark,” Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said in a statement, deeming it necessary that “the flags of other countries cannot be deployed freely.

“It will not be prohibited to use flags or banners, for example during demonstrations or sporting events,” the press release clarified.

The ban, which is due to come into force on January 1, 2025 after a vote in Parliament, follows a debate after legal proceedings against a Dane who had raised the American flag in his garden.

By authorizing this man to freely display his flag, the Supreme Court had, in 2023, ruled null and void a 1915 order prohibiting the display of foreign flags in a place, which prompted the government to legislate.

The new regulations will include many exceptions. In particular, it will not be prohibited to adorn the flagpoles of the Nordic countries, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Germany or those of international or regional organizations.

Embassies will be authorized to hoist the flags of their respective countries on their buildings.
