Niger is becoming a country of high drug consumption, said Tuesday the Nigerien Minister of Justice, Alio Daouda, in a message on the occasion of the celebration of the Day to Combat the Abuse of Illicit Narcotics and drugs.

In Niger, statistics for the year 2023 collected at the Central Office for the Repression of Illicit Drug Trafficking (OCRTIS), revealed approximately 77.52 kg of cannabis resins, 10.76 tonnes of herbs of cannabis and 61.63 kg of cocaine, said the Nigerien minister.

According to the minister, once a transit country, Niger is becoming a country of high consumption of these substances as evidenced by these statistics for the year 2023.

This day, celebrated under the theme “the facts are there, invest in prevention”, aims to raise awareness among all stakeholders of the harm that illicit substances and drugs have on humanity with a view to finding concerted solutions to curb the problem. .

Mr. Alio Daouda stressed that this day was part of the fight led by the international community against the scourge of illicit substances and drugs, with a view to controlling and controlling their harmful effects on the physical and mental health of people. consumers and the economy.

Adolescents and young people are the most exposed to drug abuse and it is undeniable that drugs and illicit substances fuel crime and insecurity which also hinder the economic development of countries, it is added.

The government of Niger intends to intensify actions to definitively combat the abuse of illicit substances and drugs in the country.
