The European Commission proposed, on Wednesday, an annual budget of 199.7 billion euros for the European Union (EU) for the 2025 financial year, with the objective of “strengthening funding for Europe’s priorities”.

This budget will be supplemented by an envelope estimated at 72 billion euros for disbursements under the European recovery plan “NextGenerationEU”, indicates the European Executive in a press release, noting that the 2025 budget will help the EU to respect its priorities policies, while incorporating the modifications agreed during the mid-term review of the multiannual financial framework (MFF) in February 2024.

The draft budget for 2025 directs funds to sectors where “they can produce the most positive effects and according to the needs of EU Member States and our partners around the world, in order to make Europe more resilient and better prepared for the future for the benefit of EU citizens and businesses,” says the Commission.

According to Brussels, this objective will be achieved by promoting ecological and digital transitions, creating jobs and strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy and its role on a global scale.

The annual budget for 2025 must be formally adopted by the EU budgetary authority before the end of the year.
