She not only came into the operating room, she also helped out. An investigation was opened by Austrian justice after revelations about an intervention during which a surgeon allegedly let her daughter participate in the operation, reported the regional daily Kleine Zeitung.
The facts would have taken place at the beginning of 2024, but they were only revealed in April after an anonymous denunciation.
“No complications”
According to the first elements of the investigation, a neurosurgeon would have brought her 13-year-old daughter into the operating room, during a surgical procedure at the Graz hospital, located in the south of Austria. Following the advice of her mother, the teenager then actively participated in the operation, under the eyes of the other staff members present.
“If the allegations are confirmed, it could be an offense of serious bodily harm,” explained Hans Körg Bacher of the Graz public prosecutor’s office, who opened an investigation, entrusted to the judicial police. In Austria, only interns and students can access the operating room, specify our colleagues from Kleine Zeitung. Even if “the intervention took place without any complications”, according to an official press release from the hospital, the consequences could have been dramatic.
After the anonymous denunciation, the caregivers present in the operating room that day were summoned by the hospital management. Initially, there was “no indication that the surgeon’s daughter had participated in the operation.” But one of the employees gave testimony that slightly disagreed with the rest of his colleagues. Two members of the surgical team were suspended during the investigation. No other incident of this type has been brought to the attention of the establishment, specifies the hospital management.
