REPORT – New Caledonia: between Nouméa and the airport, on the road to all the challenges

In New Caledonia, we learned this Saturday June 8 of the death of a man injured by police last Monday.

This is the eighth death since the start of the crisis, during clashes on the famous road which leads from Nouméa to the airport.

A TF1 team followed the gendarmes on this axis which was not completely pacified.

In the middle of the night, the armored gendarmerie “EGM 12/6 from Lodève” advances meter by meter, as we see in the TF1 report above. Stones and branches were found in the middle of the road, and the surrounding area was also examined. In the early morning, part of the road is cleared and passable again.

A vital axis

We are on RT1, the road that connects Nouméa to the northwest of the island. The portion between the capital and the airport is vital for the economic activity of the archipelago. The presence of roadblocks always complicates the supply of supermarkets, gas stations, and access to hospitals. And until the road is made safe, the international airport will remain closed to commercial flights. So every day, the teams try to clear it, and the special correspondents from 20H Weekend witnessed the latest operations.

Barely cleared, various roadblocks are put back in place by the demonstrators. Along the axis, the residents met by our team seem exasperated. According to the gendarmes, the airport could reopen within a few days, if security conditions permit.
