Morocco strongly condemned, through the voice of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, the Israeli declarations and attacks directed against the Secretary General of the United Nations and foreign leaders. He considered that such actions “hinder efforts to find peaceful solutions to conflicts.”

This statement was made during a press conference following his meeting with the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, in Rabat, which comes days after Israel announced that UN Secretary General António Guterres, was considered “a person non grata.”

Mr. Bourita stressed, in response to the Israeli attacks against Mr. Guterres, that “these offensives do not contribute to defusing tensions or seeking rapid solutions to the situation in the Middle East”. He added that initiatives could be deliberated, accepted or rejected, “within the framework of respect for the status of heads of state.”

He also warned that instability in the Middle East “fuels hatred and extremism, and constitutes a factor fueling terrorism.” He insisted that “all goodwill and all proposals must be examined constructively”noting that their adoption or rejection is a matter of sovereign decisions to be taken within a framework of mutual respect.

Mr. Bourita reaffirmed the foundations of Morocco’s position on the situation in the Middle East, according to the guidelines defined by King Mohammed VI. He declared that “Morocco’s position is very clear and has been stated several times by the monarch.” He reiterated “Morocco’s support for a two-state solution, with a Palestinian state on the June 1967 borders, the capital of which would be East Jerusalem.”

Mr. Bourita finally declared “that extremists on both sides should not be allowed to control the Middle East agenda, saying it was time for constructive actors to regain the initiative so that the region does not fall prey to radical elements from all sides.”
