On Tuesday, a committee of the Council of States refused a Geneva cantonal initiative asking to put in place the first legal bases for single public cantonal funds. Nothing to worry Pierre Maudet. The State Councilor in charge of health guarantees that this decision has no impact on his public fund project.

In Bern, the status quo regarding health policies continues. A committee of the Council of States refused the Geneva resolution which wanted to lay the first milestones for a single cantonal public health fund. An expected rejection for the Geneva Minister of Health: “If the federal chambers wanted to change something in health policy, it would be known,” quips Pierre Maudet.

On the side of Geneva State Councilor Mauro Poggia, this refusal in Bern should not be overestimated. “What the commission is saying is ‘let us work here in federal parliament’, so the work will get done. […] This decision is not a veto of cantonal proposals,” says Mauro Poggia.

The Geneva public fund still on track

Author of a postulate adopted in Bern, the elected MCG asked the Federal Council to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of granting more latitude to the cantons in the implementation of the LAMal.

In Geneva, the flagship cantonal public fund project remains on track and will be able to launch under existing laws, with the simple agreement of the federal office of public health (OFSP). Pierre Maudet remains confident that this project will bring greater efficiency and transparency.

Details on this Geneva public health fund are expected by the end of the year. This will be followed by political debates at the Grand Council for potential implementation at the end of this legislature.
