A 59-year-old pilot died on Tuesday, October 8, during a Turkish Airlines flight from Seattle to Istanbul. The plane had to make an emergency landing in New York.

A pilot of the Turkish airline Turkish Airlines died in flight following a malaise, causing the emergency landing of his aircraft at JFK airport in New York, the company announced this Wednesday, October 9.

The plane, which left on the evening of Tuesday October 8 from Seattle, on the west coast of the United States, was destined for Istanbul, Turkish Airlines spokesperson Yahya Üstün told X.

“The captain of our Airbus 350 plane (…) TK204 fainted during the flight. After a vain attempt at first aid, our cockpit (composed of two other pilots, Editor’s note) decided to make an emergency landing , but our captain lost his life before landing,” detailed Yahya Üstün.

The pilot, aged 59, had worked for the Turkish company since 2007, according to Türkiye Today. He had successfully passed a periodic medical examination at the beginning of March, the Turkish company said.
