News of the day

Ukraine announced on Saturday that it had opened an investigation into the alleged execution by Russian troops of four Ukrainian prisoners of war in the summer of 2024 in Vovchansk, the scene of bitter fighting in the northeast of the country. This investigation concerns “the deliberate assassination of four prisoners of war – servicemen of the Ukrainian armed forces – who were executed by the Russian military on the orders of their command during the summer of 2024 on the territory of the factory of aggregates from Vovchansk”, indicated the Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office of the Kharkiv region, where this city is located.

“These facts are documented thanks to cooperation with the defense intelligence services of Ukraine,” assured the Prosecutor’s Office in a press release, which indicated that it was questioning Russian prisoners of war on this subject. According to this source, a potential suspect in this case is currently “held in captivity in Ukraine” and could therefore be tried.

The number of the day

1. Russia claimed on Saturday the capture of a new village near Pokrovsk, a town which serves as a logistical node in eastern Ukraine and to which Russian forces have been gradually approaching for weeks. “Thanks to active and decisive action, units of the Southern troop grouping liberated the village of Zhelannoye Vtoroye,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in its daily report. This locality is named Jélanné Drugué in Ukrainian.

This village is located southeast of the city of Ukraïnsk, which the Russian army captured at the end of September. In this sector of the front, Russian troops threaten the town of Pokrovsk, a key logistical hub for the Ukrainian army and where there are also major coal mines.

Volodymyr Zelensky affirmed that he would present “clear and concrete measures with a view to a just end to the war”, assuring that Russia could be stopped by “the determination of partners and the strengthening of Ukraine”. This meeting will take place at a crucial moment for Ukraine before the presidential election in the United States in November, which could call into question, in the event of Donald Trump’s victory, American support, crucial for kyiv. It will also take place while more and more voices, including among kyiv’s allies, are being heard to push for negotiations with Russia, which Volodymyr Zelensky refuses.

Today’s trend

The situation in Gaza, one year after the start of the war and at a time when bombings are raging in the Middle East, as well as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, will be at the heart of the 31st edition of the Bayeux Prize for War Correspondents, which begins Monday.

Fifty-two reports were selected from 400 candidates according to Aurélie Viel. Some 350 war reporters will be present this year in Bayeux to present their exhibitions, host debates or screenings, or simply give their testimony.

“We do not forget Ukraine, nor the other conflicts”, also noted the mayor of Bayeux Patrick Gomont during the presentation of the festival program. The winners will be revealed on October 12.
