Brazil: Jair Bolsonaro hospitalized with skin infection

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced on Sunday that he had been admitted to a hospital in the northern city of Manaus to treat a skin infection.

“I am hospitalized at the Santa Julia Hospital in Manaus. I have erysipelas, no planned discharge date from the hospital,” said the leader of the Brazilian far right, aged 69, on the X network.

Erysipelas is a bacterial infection characterized by inflammation of the skin. A painful red patch most often appears on the legs and sometimes on the face, accompanied by fever.

Jair Bolsonaro “was admitted (…) yesterday (Saturday) morning due to dehydration and a skin infection,” Santa Julia hospital said in a statement on Sunday. “He remains hospitalized for intravenous antibiotic therapy and rehydration,” it is added.

The former president (2019-2022) arrived in Manaus, capital of the Brazilian Amazon, on Friday to support MP Alberto Neto, candidate for mayor of Manaus, in the state of Amazonas.

On Sunday, Alberto Neto published on his social networks a photo of himself alongside Jair Bolsonaro, smiling, lying in a hospital room. As the municipal elections approach in October, the former president is traveling the country to support his party’s candidates.

In recent years, Jair Bolsonaro has undergone several surgical operations, the last of which was in September 2023 in São Paulo, for complications relating to the stab wound received in 2018 in the abdominal region during the electoral campaign.
