The committed moments of Cannes 2024

Mistress of ceremonies this year, it was Camille Cottin who was responsible for opening the Festival on May 14 and she took the opportunity to talk about sexual violence in cinema. We only had to wait 51 seconds for the actress to salute the #MeToo movement. “I would like to point out that nocturnal professional meetings in the hotel rooms of all-powerful gentlemen are no longer part of the habits and customs of the Cannes vortex, following the adoption of the me too law and we welcome it ( sic) »specified Camille Cottin.

Judith Godrèche, the actress and screenwriter at the origin of the second #MeToo wave, accompanied her rise to the steps with a strong symbol. On the red carpet of Furiosa: A Mad Max saga On May 15, Judith Godrèche and the film crew placed their hands in front of their mouths, a gesture representing the silence imposed on victims of sexist and sexual violence. The director came to Cannes to present her short film Me too, result of the thousands of victim testimonies she received.

But the #Metoo of cinema was not the only political subject on the Croisette. Three celebrities have decided to publicly show their support for the Palestinians. On May 15, Leïla Bekhti appeared on the red carpet wearing a heart-shaped badge representing a watermelon, a symbol of the resistance of the Palestinian people. The French actress had already expressed her support last November in a video with UNICEF.

For her part, Cate Blanchett took the steps on May 20 wearing a black, white and green dress which, when combined with the red of the carpet, gives the colors of the flag of Palestine. Even if the actress has not confirmed the symbolism of her gesture, the coincidence is impossible for Internet users. Model Bella Hadid walked on the Croisette this Friday, May 24 with a red and white keffiyeh dress, symbol of the Palestinian cause popularized by Yasser Arafat.

Laura Blajman-Kadar is a survivor of the October 7 attack by Hamas in Israel and wrote the book Believe in life where she writes down this traumatic day.
