T“Early this morning, a group of terrorists attempted to infiltrate the Faladié gendarmerie school,” the army said in a statement published on social media.

“The situation is under control,” the Malian army said.

Media reported that gunmen attacked a military camp in the Malian capital Bamako on Tuesday morning, causing gunfire and explosions to ring out and the airport to be closed.

The gunfire of varying intensity, interspersed with explosions, began around 5 a.m. (local time and GMT), according to media reports.

“Armed men who have not yet been formally identified attacked at least one gendarmerie camp in Bamako this morning,” said a gendarmerie official, quoted by the media.

“Bamako airport is temporarily closed due to the events,” an airport official also said.

Mali has been facing the spread of terrorist violence since 2012.
