The men’s and women’s volleyball Super Cup took place on Saturday in Nantes, and saw victory for Montpellier in the men’s category and Nantes in the women’s category.
The men’s and women’s Ligue A season will start next weekend, and as tradition dictates, the Super Cup took place this Saturday, to award a first trophy for the 2024-25 season. And the lucky winners are Montpellier and Nantes! The Hérault club, finalist of the last Coupe de France, replaced the winner Nantes-Rezé, who filed for bankruptcy during the summer, and therefore faced the French champion St-Nazaire, who came as a neighbor in the Trocardière hall. And the Montpellier team won in five sets: 25-17, 34-36, 18-25, 25-17, 15-13. After a first set dominated from start to finish, the Héraultais lost an interminable second set, where they missed nine set points, before giving in on the third of the French champions. St-Nazaire followed up by easily winning the third set, then Montpellier won the fourth and everything came down to a tie-break. A tie-break during which the SNVBA led 9-6, before cracking and losing on the first match point for the Héraultais, who therefore won their second Supercup, after the one in 2022 won against Chaumont. Next Saturday, they will travel to Tours to start the championship. Another very big test!
First Super Cup for Nantes
On the women’s side, the match pitted the surprise French champions of last season, Levallois-Paris, against the winners of the Coupe de France and vice-champions of France, Nantes. And in front of their many supporters, facing the other team that will represent France in the Champions League, the Neptunes won in three sets: 25-23, 25-23, 25-18. The Nantes team won the first set by a hair’s breadth, winning the last three points, then the second in almost the same way, after trailing until 21-20. In the third, however, Nantes led from start to finish and won by seven points. This is the very first Super Cup won by the Neptunes, who will be able to start the championship with full confidence.
