Mid-season, the love triangle that was brewing between Brie, Mike and Brady materializes in infidelity. While Brie has just announced to Brady that Lark had betrayed him and was still dating Jimmy, the two exes are back on the table, on the bar's pool table. Questioned by the American media Variety, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith explained how the scene was prepared, and it started with a surprising refusal: “We always offer an intimacy coordinator to actors. In this specific case, Ben and Zibby (Ben Hollingsworth and Zibby Allen, the two actors, editor's note) declined the offer, but we thought about it a lot. We work with RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), and I had a meeting with them personally, just to brief me, because we knew we wanted it to be physical, sensual and, of a certain manner, aggressive“, he said. And added: “This is the part that made me nervous because I didn't know how far it would go. I was reminded that sexual assault and violence are often about domination. I think we were very respectful. I also think that Zibby and Ben, both researching the subject on their own, really brought a level of awareness to the fact that they were sort of coordinating the scene themselves.“

As for why this infidelity happened, which Mike discovers in the season finale, many fans are wondering why Brie can't settle down with Mike or leave him once and for all. And the showrunner has his own idea on the subject: “I think she's trying to make something work that, on all levels, should work. I think what baffles her is wondering why that isn't the case. Additionally, given her experience and being a survivor of sexual assault by a partner, I think she doubts deep down that she can make the right choices. I think she's making the obvious choice of Mike and trying to force it, and that's where the problem lies.“
