Barely launched, the Basic TV subscription at €10 penalizes customers of the French-speaking bouquet: “We are going to correct that”

Reminder: goodbye to the logic of the pack, Base TV is an independent subscription, to be consumed on the Internet connection of your choice. The decoder is being phased out, in favor of an application available on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, smartphones, Android tablets and boxes, Android TV televisions.

We tested the Basic digital TV at €10 per month: the 3 qualities, the 3 defects, the exclusion of Samsung and LG TVs

A weak resolution for TF1, France 2, France 3, etc.

On the Base website or app, the subscription form asks you to choose between the French-speaking selection (€10 per month, 28 channels), the Dutch-speaking selection (€10 per month, 28 channels) or both ( €16 per month, 56 channels). Once the registration procedure is completed, activation is immediate.

Everything would be fine in the best of all possible worlds if certain channels did not display an image of insufficient quality, especially on a large television.

Why how ? It’s a question of image definition. Major channels like TF1, France 2 and France 3 are limited to a resolution of 1024×576 pixels. It is acceptable on smartphone, tablet or a moderately sized screen. It starts to hurt the eyes on a 4K TV of 50 inches and above.

On a channel like TF1, the image resolution drops to 1024×576 pixels, a definition which penalizes reproduction on large televisions. ©GL

The pill is all the more bitter to swallow as the French-speaking selection and the French-speaking selection are not in the same boat, as shown in the inventory below.

Base commits to correcting the situation

“Historically, the most watched channels for us were the Dutch-speaking channels, given our customer base,” explains Telenet, owner of Base. “We intend to change that. We will look at how to also offer Full HD quality (1920×1080) for the most watched French-speaking channels and increase the level of other French-speaking channels. This will be done gradually, we cannot yet provide precise timing but we are working on it. ”
