In April 2023, Paramount opened the doors to a new cinematic universe inspired by legendary role-playing games Dungeons and Dragons. Helped by the success of several productions set in fantasy worlds, the studio hoped to capitalize on the fame of the brand as much as on the renewed interest generated by the series. Stranger Things. Under the leadership of eOne, at the time owned by Hasbro, the film by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley was to give birth to a saga of all superlatives. The honor of thieves had also benefited from rave reviewsboth from the press and the public.

Nostalgic as can be, Dungeons and Dragons reconnected with fantasy epics and pure entertainment products. However, despite these solid arguments, The Honor of Thieves stood out in the flop category of 2023. While its budget is estimated at $150 million (without the budget devoted to promotion), the film ultimately only grossed 208 million across the world. Paramount thus did not recoup its costs, dashing the hopes of sequels for Edgin Darvis’ troupe. This failure also had other consequences, the studio abandoned its series for Paramount+. Announced in January 2023, the spin-off was to tell a new story in eight episodes. Deadline announces that the platform has thrown in the towel.

Hasbro wants to make a 20

All is not lost for the universe Dungeons and Dragons. If the series developed by Paramount+ is on holdA new project could see the light of day. According to information from the American media, it is undergoing a creative update before being presented to potential buyers from a list of co-producers and platforms. Concretely, several writers will be mobilized to give this series another chance. If the snowy mountain has left the game, Hasbro remains determined to bring about this production inspired by the games which are among the best-selling in its catalog. Note that this is not the only project that Hasbro is counting on, A musical is currently playing on Broadway.

Nothing indicates yet whether this hypothetical new series will evolve around the characters played by Chris Pine, Regé-Jean Page, Justine Smith, Michelle Rodriguez and Sophia Lillis. The universe of role playing game born in the 70s is massive, so many stories that could be at the epicenter of this series whose destiny is still uncertain. Note that more than Dungeons and Dragons has a colossal international community (50 million players for almost 50 years) and that Hasbro is just waiting to find the adaptation capable of creating real excitement on the small or big screen. The honor of thieves — like his predecessors — has not been able to do so, but the die has not yet been cast.
