FORESTHILL — A fight broke out on the court during a school basketball game in Northern California Tuesday night, between Foresthill and Futures high schools.

Playing at home, the Foresthill team was trailing 25-14 during the second quarter, but the incident led to the match being abandoned for good.

“Tensions were building during the game and fouls were not being called, which made the game more and more physical,” said Reggie Worton, a former Foresthill student and witness to the incident.

Worton said the argument began when a Foresthill player was fouled by a Futures opponent as he was about to make a two-point shot.

“Right after the foul, a player from the opposing team approached him to challenge him,” Worton reported.

Subsequently, another Futures player joined the feud.

“A teammate of the challenged player then intervened and pushed the two to the ground,” he said.

Players, coaches, referees, parents and staff then invaded the field, but the exact circumstances of the incident are under investigation.

“I think I only saw one hit,” Worton added.

The principal of Foresthill High sent a statement to families and CBS13:

“Unfortunately, an altercation occurred during the Foresthill High School varsity boys basketball game last night. We are working with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the situation.

Please know that our priority remains the safety of students, athletes, staff, spectators and the community during sporting events.

For its part, Futures High School also released a similar statement:

“We are aware of the incident during last night’s match between Futures and Foresthill. At Gateway Community Charter Schools, we place the safety, fair play and well-being of all students, staff and spectators at the heart of our athletic programs.

We are currently gathering information regarding the events and working closely with the CIF-SJS to ensure a thorough review of the situation. While we cannot comment on specific details at this time, we want to reassure our community that appropriate action will be taken, consistent with our school values and policies.

We remain committed to fostering a positive and respectful environment, both on and off the field, emphasizing the importance of teamwork, respect and responsibility in all our activities.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we address this matter. »

“We see professionals fighting and getting suspended for one or two matches; while I hear that some of these players will not be able to play the rest of the season,” Worton stressed. “When you see a player pushing his teammate, it’s difficult not to intervene to support him. »

The California Interscholastic Federation has not yet determined the consequences for those involved, but clarification is expected to come in the coming days.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the school security officer was not present when the fight broke out, but the investigation is still open.

The situation highlights a broader problem in the school sports environment, where respect for the rules and fair play is essential. What measures should be taken to prevent such incidents and promote a healthy atmosphere on the grounds? Reflections on these issues are essential for the development of amateur sport.
