Hamas approves Gaza ceasefire deal, Palestinian sources say

As soon as the power of Bashar al-Assad fell on December 8, Israel sent troops to a demilitarized buffer zone in the Golan, in southwest Syria, on the edge of the part of this plateau occupied by Israel since the war of 1967 and annexed in 1981.

Israel, which views the new authorities with suspicion, has since carried out hundreds of strikes on military sites of the former power in Syria, claiming to want to prevent the arsenal of the fallen regime from falling into the hands of the new forces.

During Syria’s civil war that began under Bashar al-Assad in 2011, Israel carried out hundreds of strikes against positions of the Syrian army and its allies, including Lebanese Hezbollah and Iran.

The new Syrian leader, Ahmad al-Chareh, denounced the intrusion of Israeli forces in mid-December, affirming however that Syria was too “exhausted” by the war to engage in a new conflict.
