The head of Russian diplomacy said on Tuesday that Moscow was willing to study proposals from US President-elect Donald Trump for a settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

“When Trump, who becomes president, finally formulates his position on Ukrainian affairs, of course, we will study it,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a press briefing in Moscow.

Trump says he wants to quickly resolve this long-standing conflict. According to his special envoy Keith Kellogg, the short-term goal, within 100 days, is to end the war, which will enter its third year in February.

Lavrov clarified that Russia has not yet received any proposals for a meeting between Trump and President Vladimir Putin.

“At this point, all these explanations, initiatives and thinking out loud have no practical effect, so we must wait for the new administration to formulate its official approaches,” he added.

The head of Russian diplomacy welcomed the reference to “ground realities” made by Trump’s team with a view to resolving the conflict.

According to him, Donald Trump became the first Western politician to admit that NATO lied to Russia on the issue of not expanding the Alliance to Eastern countries.

Regarding Trump’s statements on the purchase or possible takeover of Greenland, Sergei Lavrov stressed that we must first “listen to the Greenlanders”.
