1.3 million electric cars sold in the United States in 2024, and not a single Chinese or European brand in the ranking.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

The American electric vehicle market had a record year in 2024 with 1.3 million electric cars sold. However, behind these impressive figures lies a less rosy reality: the total absence of European and Chinese manufacturers in the top 10 sales.

Origin Number of models in the top 10 Total market share Flagship models
UNITED STATES 8 > 70 % Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, Ford Mach-E
South Korea 1 3,40 % Hyundai Ioniq 5
Japan 1 2,50 % Honda Prologue
Europe 0 0 %
Chine 0 0 %

This situation is not the result of chance. The American market, traditionally protectionist, has turned further in on itself with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) which explicitly favors cars assembled in North America.

The only notable exception in this landscape dominated by American manufacturers: Hyundai, which has also inaugurated a new factory in Georgia to benefit from tax advantages. There is also the Japanese Honda, thanks to its Prologue, a model designed in collaboration with… General Motors, one of the American giants.

Tesla: the overwhelming domination of a local giant

The numbers speak for themselves: Tesla occupies three places in the top 10, including the first twowith a combined market share of 46.2%.

The Model Y, nicknamed “the SUV for everyone” by Elon Musk, alone represents 28.6% of electric car sales in the United States. A domination which can be explained by several factors: local production, a mature charging network, and a particularly strong brand image among American consumers.

But who can stop the Tesla Model Y? Even in China, the electric SUV is unbeatable

Imagine for a moment doing your shopping in a supermarket where 80% of the products come from the same supplier. This is a bit like the situation for Americans looking for an electric car! While the rest of the world can choose between Volkswagen's ID.4, BYD Seal, Xpeng's G6, Renault's Scenic E-Tech or even the BMW i4, Americans have to make do with a selection… let's say , very patriotic.

The problem? This desire to “protect” the American market could turn against them.

Foreign manufacturers, discouraged by a mountain of paperwork and taxes that send prices skyrocketing, prefer to play elsewhere. And honestly, who can blame them? While they are struggling in the American market, Europe and Asia are reaching out to them.

Despite everything, in 2025, several European and Chinese manufacturers announced their intention to produce locally in the United States, a strategy which could finally allow them to compete with established players on their own soil. However, the election of Donald Trump can also complicate everything.
