I-CAD has unveiled its annual rankings of the most popular names chosen by the French for their pet. A top 10 which has a few surprises in store. Is the tradition of the letter of the year of birth respected? Cat and dog owners, have you followed the trend?
After the recent ranking of the French’s favorite dog and cat breeds in 2024, discover the list of dog and cat names most given last year. This top 10 again comes from I-CAD, which manages the National Identification File for dogs, cats and ferrets (tattoo and microchip). What is the top 3? Is the top of the podium occupied by the same names for cats and dogs?
The most given dog names in 2024
According to tradition, for dogs and especially purebred dogs, each year of birth corresponds to a letter. In 2024, the animal’s name had to begin with a V. Naming your puppy respecting the letter of the year is necessary to establish its pedigree and register it in the French Book of Origins (LOF).
The 3 most given dog names last year are: Vanilla (13,374 dogs identified); Vicky (12,376 dogs identified) and Venus (10,896 dogs identified).

The most given cat names in 2024
For cats, owners obviously follow the instructions of the initial letter of the first name less. The name most given last year does not start with one of the letters of the 2024 combo (V, W, 7687 cats identified). Simba and Vanille then arrive in 2nd and 3rd positions.
