Under what conditions were North Korean soldiers sent to Ukraine? Under what orders are they participating in this war? Although the presence of the country’s soldiers on the Ukrainian front is no longer in doubt, there has been little evidence to answer these questions until now. However, this veil on the reality of North Korean soldiers in Ukraine is being lifted.

On January 11, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared on his X account, with supporting images, that the Ukrainian army had captured two wounded North Korean soldiers in the Russian oblast of Kursk. In a video relayed by President Zelensky, we see two men lying on a bed answering questions from Ukrainian authorities in Korean.

One of them explains that his commanders told him that he would participate not in a war but in a “training”, by expressing his desire to “a Ukraine remains” rather than returning to North Korea. According to President Zelensky, who is proposing an exchange of prisoners in Pyongyang, the Ukrainian security services are currently carrying out interrogations.

According to the intelligence services of Seoul and Washington, between 10,000 and 12,000 North Korean soldiers have been dispatched to the Russian front
