Donald Trump, who has been repeating his allusions to Canada as the 51st American state since the end of November, clarified his intentions at a press conference on Tuesday. Asked about a possible use of armed forces to annex Canada, the American president-designate replied “no”, adding that he would instead use “economic force”.

This is what the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, responded the day after the announcement of his resignation. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Donald Trump demonstrates a total lack of understanding of what makes Canada a strong country.

    • What “economic force”?

The president-elect, however, did not provide further details on the “economic force” he intends to use against Canada. Since the end of November, he has threatened to impose customs tariffs 25% off all products from Canada and Mexico.

Donald Trump also refused to rule out a possible annexation by force of the Panama Canal, a vital economic artery for the world economy, and Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. The crown of Denmark also modified its coat of arms on Tuesday – to the great amazement of historians – to leave more room for the symbols of Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
