Valencia advance to Copa del Rey round of 16 in Elda

MADRID, January 7. (EUROPA PRESS) – Valencia validated their place in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE 2024-25 after a 2-0 victory against Eldense at the Nuevo Pepico Amat, marking Carlos Corberán’s first victory as coach of the ‘che’ team.

The Valencians, currently second to last in LaLiga EA Sports, welcomed recent signing Umar Sadiq to their ranks and took just nine minutes to take the lead at Elda. Diego López made a decisive move down the flank, finding Sergi Canós, who turned in the box before smashing the ball into the net.

In the next action, Diego Collado almost equalized with a shot that skimmed the post, while Pepelu responded with an attempt that missed the target. Juanto Ortuño also tried to score a goal for the hosts, but Stole Dimitrievski denied him late in the first half.

Following a questionable fall in the Eldense area by Víctor García after contact with Jesús Vázquez, the referee did not consider this sufficient to award a penalty. However, the ‘che’ team doubled their lead thanks to Diego López, who scored unopposed at the far post in the 39th minute.

The blue and red team looked for a goal immediately after the break, but it was Valencia who came close again with a chance from Diego López, which was spectacularly saved by Dani Martín. In the 73rd minute, André Almeida thought he had found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out due to Sadiq’s offside blocking the home goalkeeper’s view.

The score remained unchanged, and Valencia will be present in the draw for the round of 16 next Wednesday, joining eleven other Primera teams, as well as two from LaLiga Hypermotion – Almería and Elche, one from Primera RFEF – Ourense CF, and another from Segunda RFEF – Pontevedra CF.
