“These changes are an attempt to return to our commitments to freedom of expression” declares Meta following the announcement of the abandonment of moderation on all of its networks. Mark Zuckerberg’s company draws on its main competitor, Elon Musk, and does not hide it. Over the coming months, Facebook, Instagram and Threads will abandon the control of abusive posts by fact-checkers in favor of a community rating system, like what X has been offering for some time now.
“We’ve seen this approach work on We believe this is a better way to achieve our original goal of providing people with information about what they see, while limiting opinion bias.” explains the company.
Community Notes will replace the warnings that previously hid certain posts. A message indicating that additional information is available will invite users to deepen their understanding of the post in question. There is no confirmation yet whether a preview of the note will also be displayed. This change will come into effect in the United States first, before affecting the rest of the world.
A desire to do well which is not without risk
As on X, Meta specifies that only certain certified users will be able to post such notes. Several contributors “having different points of view” will be consulted before publication of the message “to avoid biased evaluations” specifies the company. The social media group hopes to limit excessive automatic censorship and considers that it hides too much “harmless content” at present.
On such platforms, freedom of expression at all costs is a great goal that nonetheless remains risky. Twitter has never been more polluted with fake accounts and abusive posts than since Elon Musk’s moderation changes. Community Notes are a welcome addition but are not enough to prevent sensitive content and biased opinions.
