Arsenal and Newcastle prepare for VAR decisions to be announced at Carabao Cup

In a groundbreaking move, English is set to implement in-stadium VAR announcements for the first time during next week’s Carabao Cup semi-finals. This innovative test will allow referees to use the public address system to communicate their final decisions, whether they come from the pitchside VAR monitor or are based on clear determinations involving incidents such as a player’s hands. scorer or offside following contact with the ball.

The English Football League (EFL) has officially confirmed that this pilot plan will be in action during both legs of the semi-finals between Arsenal and Newcastle United, as well as Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. To prepare for this significant development, referees participated in comprehensive training sessions, including specialist camps and match-related exercises, held in stadiums, to ensure a smooth rollout of this new approach.

An EFL representative highlighted that the initiative is part of a wider commitment to transparency in the game. “This test, which reflects our overall commitment to transparency, aims to provide greater clarity and understanding on crucial decisions, and it will take place in the two matches between Arsenal and Newcastle United and between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool,” the spokesperson said.

The development marks a milestone for English football, as no domestic tournament has previously adopted in-stadium announcements for VAR decisions. A recent example of the effectiveness of this measure was demonstrated during the Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, where referees were able to communicate decisions in real time to fans.

Both Arsenal and Newcastle will take part in this historic test, with the first match of their semi-final scheduled for January 7. The clash between Tottenham and Liverpool is scheduled to begin on January 8. Although VAR has previously been applied in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, it was notably absent last year when Middlesbrough, one of the four remaining teams, did not have VAR facilities at their home ground.

The Gunners have a historic reputation for being at the forefront of footballing innovations, including the first English league match broadcast live on radio in 1927, the world’s first ever televised football match in 1937, and the launch of broadcast sports live in 3D in 2010.

While it remains to be seen whether this VAR call test will become a permanent feature of English football, it certainly has the potential to bring long-awaited clarity to what has often been a confusing and opaque decision-making process.
