A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Chinese region of Tibet on Tuesday, January 7, killing at least 95 people and injuring 130. But a false image slipped among the many photos and videos shared online to document the disaster. Posted by this account (new window)the images show a building tilted by the tremor, threatening to collapse. In reality, the building is located in Taiwan: these images were shot when the archipelago was also hit by an earthquake, on April 3, 2024.
We find the leaning building in this report from the SkyNews channel, posted on YouTube (new window) nine months ago, or in this short video posted on TikTok (new window) by the Daily Mail. But also on several photos taken by the Taiwan Central News Agency (CNA) and retrieved by Agence France Presse (AFP). The building is not the only one to have been shaken by the gusts, as we can see in other images (new window) impressive.
The Taiwan earthquake was accompanied by multiple false images, old or taken out of context, as we reported (new window) at the time. To ensure the reliability of the images and videos used to illustrate an event, you need to pay attention to several things. And first of all to the source of these publications, as well as any other element which would be a guarantee of seriousness.
